We present to you an interview with a special twist! Instead of interviewing one Alumni, we had the pleasure of interviewing two recent Human Kinetics Alumni, as well as one soon to be Alumni. We introduce to you, the Nigh brothers! Bob and Ted Nigh have both graduated from the Human Kinetics Sport and Physical Education program, and youngest brother John Nigh is graduating this year from Sport and Physical Education as well.
Since graduating from Laurentian, eldest brother Bob, spent some time working as an Elite Facilitator at a sports camp running team building activities. Bob later completed his Masters in Sports Science at Ohio University, and is now currently working as a Physiotherapy Assistant in his hometown of Barrie, Ontario. He aspires to further his career and hopefully teach/coach at the collegiate level. Looking back, Bob credits a lot of his career path to the hands on experience he acquired as a trainer for the Laurentian men’s hockey team.
Unlike his older brother, Ted took the Human Kinetics Sports and Physical Education program with the Concurrent Education attachment. Ted has graduated from the Sport and Physical Education program and is currently in his fifth year of study in the School of Education to complete the requirements for his Concurrent Education degree. Ted aspires to teach, and is willing to go wherever that may take him. He also plans to follow in Bob’s footsteps by attending Ohio University.
John Nigh also decided to pursue the Sport and Physical Education program with Concurrent Education. He is in his fourth year of study in Sport and Physical Education, and next year will complete his final year of Concurrent Education. John ideally wants to complete a Masters in Physical Education, and is even thinking of doing this while teaching out in Eastern Canada.
All three brothers have been avid participants and leaders on the Laurentian Kin Games team. John is currently a captain of the team and works vigorously putting together practice times, fundraisers, and reservations so that the team can succeed in competition. The brothers were quick to agree with one another that one of the greatest lessons they learnt in University was time management skills, and working around a fuller schedule. They advised to get into a routine and stick to that routine until it feels natural.
Another topic the brothers immediately agreed on was their favourite year of Outdoor School. All three said that the portage/camping trip in Outdoor School 3 was by far their favourite. Ted and Bob loved to reminisce about the night time campfires, and how it brought everyone in the program so much closer to one another. John even got to see his first shooting star during his trip, and loves reliving the lasting memories with his program.
We would like to thank the Nigh brothers for taking the time out of their schedule to sit down with us. It is great to see multiple generations enjoying the Human Kinetics programs offered at Laurentian, and helping one another through role modelling and experience.
